Poultry farming, a promising avenue for self-employment - Dr Gill

LUDHIANA: Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, successfully concluded an intensive two-week 'Poultry Farming Training' Programme, marked by vibrant participation from 42 trainees, including 41 men and 1 woman representing multiple districts of Punjab. 

Dr. J.P.S. Gill, Vice-Chancellor, lauded the Extension Education wing for delivering a well-planned and impactful training initiative. He reiterated the university’s unwavering commitment to uplifting livestock farmers through scientific interventions and skill-oriented programmes. Dr. Gill highlighted poultry farming as a promising avenue for self-employment, income generation and rural entrepreneurship. 

Dr. R.S. Grewal, Director of Extension Education, reaffirmed the university’s dedication to strengthening rural livelihoods through livestock-based enterprises. He emphasized that poultry farming offers immense potential to drive economic empowerment, especially among rural youth. 

Dr. Jaswinder Singh, Course Director and HoD of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, explained that the course was designed with a perfect blend of theory and hands-on learning. Key components included modern housing systems, balanced feeding, disease management, biosecurity, zoonotic concerns and marketing strategies to ensure profitability in poultry ventures. 

The programme was further enriched by a special lecture delivered by Dr. Harpal Singh Sodi, Assistant General Manager, Venky’s India Ltd., who shared valuable insights on emerging trends and best practices in commercial poultry production, greatly enhancing participant confidence.
