AMRITSAR: On the occasion of World Environment Day, Municipal Commissioner Gulpreet Singh Aulakh planted trees at Children’s Park located in Gol Bagh. The event was organized jointly by the Municipal Corporation and Larsen & Toubro under the Amritsar Bulk Water Supply Scheme Project (ABWSS). The main objective of the event was to raise awareness among people about environmental protection and to encourage them to plant more trees.
On this occasion, Commissioner Gulpreet Singh Aulakh emphasized that planting more trees is essential to mitigate the impact of climate change. He appealed to the public to take advantage of the upcoming monsoon season, which is the most suitable time for tree plantation. He urged individuals to plant trees wherever space is available—be it near their homes or within institutional premises. He stressed that people often neglect tree care after planting, due to which the trees die before they mature. Therefore, along with planting trees, it is equally important to water them regularly and take proper care until they are fully grown. Project Manager of the ABWSS Project, Mr. Kuldeep Singh Saini (Retired Chief Engineer), shared that under the project, there is a provision to plant ten trees for every tree cut. So far, 329 trees have been cut under the project, and approximately 3, 300 trees are to be planted. Out of these, 2, 135 trees have already been planted.
He also mentioned that parks will be developed near the overhead tanks being constructed in the city, and tree plantation will be carried out there as well. On this occasion, a cleanliness drive focused on plastic waste was also conducted in Vallah, along with tree plantation. Deputy Project Manager Narinderpal Singh, Project Manager of Larsen & Toubro Rahul Patel, Ashwani Kumar, Sukhbir Singh, S.D.O. Ranjit Singh, Harpreet Singh, and Dr. Monika Sabharwal were also present during the event.
