AMRITSAR: On the occasion of Bandi Chhor Diwas, Singh Sahib Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, paid tributes to Sher-e-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh by lighting traditional desi ghee diyas at the historic Hawa Mahal located inside Rambagh, Amritsar.
During the visit, Jathedar Gargajj strongly criticized the Punjab Government for its indifference, pointing out that while the entire city was illuminated for Bandi Chhor Diwas and Diwali, no lighting or decoration had been arranged at the Hawa Mahal of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. In contrast, he said, the nearby clubs and liquor outlets inside Rambagh were fully decorated and illuminated.
“This clearly shows that the Punjab Government has no true sensitivity or respect towards Sikh sentiments and heritage, ” said Jathedar Gargajj.
Representatives of the Amritsar Vikas Manch were also present alongside Jathedar Gargajj when the lamps were lit at Hawa Mahal.
Expressing deep sorrow, he said, “It is truly painful that when the entire city of Amritsar shines bright on Bandi Chhor Diwas and Diwali, the palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh stands in complete darkness.” He further added, “While liquor bars inside this very garden are fully lit, the section belonging to Maharaja Ranjit Singh — under the control of the Punjab Government — remains engulfed in darkness, without a single source of light.”
Jathedar Gargajj remarked that the government often claims to respect Maharaja Ranjit Singh, but the ground reality here speaks otherwise. “Governments must not think that Sikhs are unaware or indifferent, ” he warned.
Appealing to the Sikh community, he urged, “Whenever there is a Gurpurb or festival, the palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh should be illuminated. Even if the government does nothing, Sikhs themselves must take responsibility to preserve and honor this great heritage.”
He also called upon the people of Punjab, particularly the residents of Amritsar, to be aware, sensitive, and respectful towards their historical legacy and ensure that such neglect is not repeated.
