CHANDIGARH: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Punjab Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains raised serious concerns over the functioning of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), stating that the allegations levelled by former Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh Ji point to a deep-rooted institutional crisis. Calling the revelations extremely alarming, the AAP leader said they are not routine accusations but evidence of how the supreme Sikh body has drifted from its foundational principles and been reduced to the control of a single family.
Referring to disclosures about the alleged sale of gurdwara lands and the disappearance of sacred saroops, Harjot Singh Bains said the developments have shaken the Sikh Sangat worldwide. He asserted that when a respected Jathedar raises questions on corruption and nepotism, it reflects a situation that has gone beyond internal differences and demands urgent scrutiny.
In a video message, Harjot Singh Bains said, “The allegations levelled by the former Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh Ji, are extremely alarming. These are not merely allegations, but a living proof of the downfall of the supreme Sikh institution, which has now been turned into the private estate of a particular family.”
Referring to the revelations made by Giani Raghbir Singh Ji regarding the sale of gurdwara lands and the disappearance of priceless religious scriptures, Harjot Singh Bains said the disclosures have shaken the Sikh Sangat across the world. “It is shameful that the institution entrusted with safeguarding the interests of the Panth has been reduced to a centre of servitude to one family and a platform to fulfil their political interests, ” he added.
Demanding a thorough probe, Harjot Singh Bains said, “All these serious allegations must be investigated through a high-level and impartial inquiry so that the truth can be brought clearly before the Sangat. The SGPC must be freed from the control of one family so that the institution can once again work for the welfare of the entire Sikh Panth in accordance with its glorious history.”
