CHANDIGARH: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday ordered the suspension of Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ravjot Kaur Grewal ahead of the upcoming November 11 Assembly bypoll in the district.
According to an official communication, Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar has been given additional charge as SSP Tarn Taran with immediate effect. The order, however, did not specify the reason behind Grewal’s suspension.
The move comes days before polling and follows a complaint lodged last month by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal, who had accused SSP Grewal of misusing police machinery to register “false” FIRs against Akali leaders and workers to obstruct their campaign activities in Tarn Taran.
The SAD had also staged a dharna demanding Grewal’s removal, alleging that she was acting under political pressure to harass its party cadre.
Polling for the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election is scheduled for November 11, while the results will be declared on November 14. The seat fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.
