NAWANSHAHR:On July 20, 2019 at around 7 am, a very unfortunate incident took place with an inter-state labourer's family living on a tubewell in the land of a landlord on Rahon-Bahiloor Kalan Road, near here. The water motor in the deep well in this land was not running due to the overflow of air. Madhu Kumar, a labourer living there with his 4 children, wife and parents, went down into the well to drive out the air in it. But he did not return. Terrified, his wife, Malti Devi, too rushed into the well. But she did not know that the poisonous gas in the well had ended her husband's life and that she too would die. With the death of both husband and wife, the family plunged into a dark future as elderly parents and 4 minor children were left with no support.
The accident was related to agriculture and financial assistance is provided by the market committees for such accidents. In order to provide financial assistance to the victim's family, the application and required documents must be submitted within 1 year from the date of the accident for the relevant action. However, the landlord in this case refused to confirm the accident and the victim's family remained facing a tough time.
Finally, the victim's family reached the Legal Aid Clinic of the District Legal Services Authority's Legal Services Center at village Kot Ranjha and conveyed their hardships to the Para Legal Volunteer, Baldev Bharti. Under the guidance of Kanwaljit Singh Bajwa, District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and as per the directions of CJM-cum-Secretary District Legal Services Authority, Harpreet Kaur, paralegal volunteer Baldev Bharti worked hard and completed the entire process and formalities and the case was brought up before the Market Committee. As a result the Market Committee Nawanshahr transferred Rs. 80, 000 / - to the bank account of the elderly head of the family while fixed deposit certificates of Rs. 80, 000 / - each were prepared for 4 minor children. Thus the financial assistance of Rs. 4 lakh for the family of the accident victim was received from the Market Committee due to the initiatives taken by the District Legal Services Authority, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, informed an official release here today.
