15 August 1962 - On the Independence Day of the country, a personality was born in the culturally rich village of Fatuhi Khera in Punjab, who has been continuously inspiring the society through the confluence of education, service and creativity. This is the story of Vijay Garg - a teacher, writer, carrier of scientific thinking and social worker, whose life became a living school in itself.
Dedication to education
After completing his MSc, BSc, BEd and PGD in Statistics, Vijay Garg worked as a Mathematics lecturer in Punjab Education Department for 20 years. Thereafter he served for 4½ years as Principal, PES-1 Principal Government Girls Senior Secondary School, MHR Malout. He retired from government service as Principal P. His scope of teaching was not limited to arithmetic only but he also taught his students the values and ethics of life. Today his disciples are working as doctors, engineers, professors and administrative officers in various fields of the country.
From teacher to social worker
Vijay Garg's role is not limited to just a teacher. He is also a guide, a thinker and a social architect. Using digital means, he established "New National Digital Library" where study material, guidance, competitive exam books and general knowledge resources are provided to students of science and mathematics. Especially through WhatsApp groups, he provided books and guides in digital format to hundreds of students for difficult exams like NEET/JEE/UPSC/IAS/Olympiad/other competitive exam books for free.
Writing: A torch of ideas
Vijay Garg considered writing not just a hobby or a profession but a social responsibility. He has published thousands of articles in English, Hindi and Punjabi languages in national and state level newspapers and magazines. He has been a regular columnist in reputed magazines like 'Junior Science Refresher'. The subject of his articles has not only been education but has also extended to social awareness, environment, science dissemination, life skills and psychological needs of students.
Over 125 Books: A Treasury of Knowledge
As an author, he has written more than 125 books. These books are dedicated to quick revision of NPSE, NMMS, Vedic Maths, Social Sciences, IX-X Class Maths and XII Maths. The greatest thing about his writings is that he made difficult subjects accessible to students through simple language and interesting examples. His books gave confidence to students, especially from rural backgrounds, that they too can dream big.
Dedication to science
His scientific vision was not limited to theories only, rather he inspired students towards innovation by participating in national science fairs. He has participated in the National Science Fair twice and the National Children's Science Congress thrice. The science projects of his students have been selected and honored at the state level.
Active even after retirement
There is no retirement from service – he proved this. Even when he retired from the education department at the age of 58, his life did not stop. He is still active in writing new books, distributing digital learning material and career counseling. He organizes free career guidance sessions for students and parents, from which hundreds of families have benefited.
Honours and recognition
His contribution was also recognized by the education department. He was awarded a special appreciation certificate by the "Punjab Education Secretary". This honor is a formal evaluation of his continuous contribution, but the real recognition is those students who are moving ahead in life today with his blessings.
Family life and legacy
Vijay Garg's family background has also been full of educational values. His son, Dr. Ankush Garg, is pursuing MD Radiology at the Government Medical College, Srinagar - a proof that he has instilled the same values in his son.
The power of surrender over fatigue
Today, at the age of 62, when the body needs rest, Vijay Garg's mind and brain are busy with new creations, new ideas and plans for social service. His life is a living proof that there is no age for service and creation. He is constantly engaged in learning, teaching and giving direction to the society.
His life teaches us that if a person is determined, he can give direction to the society without any platform, without any post or publicity. Vijay Garg is not only a teacher, but he is an ideology – the ideology of service and simplicity, which is becoming more relevant with time.
The life of such a person can become not the subject of a book but the beginning of a movement – a movement in which every learner can become a teacher and every teacher can become an architect of the society.
