MOHALI: A 27-year-old youth from Mohali was allegedly stabbed to death by migrant workers in Jagatpura village on the eve of Maha Shivratri, triggering tension in the area.
The deceased, identified as Gursev Singh Bhangu, had gone to Jagatpura to pay obeisance at a temple on the auspicious occasion. According to the police, a group of migrant labourers, reportedly from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, were engaged in a heated altercation near the temple premises late in the evening.
Eyewitnesses said Gursev Singh Bhangu intervened in an attempt to pacify the fighting men. However, during the scuffle, one of the accused allegedly pulled out a sharp-edged weapon and stabbed him. Victim was running a consultancy firm in Phase 11, Mohali.
He was rushed to Fortis Hospital Mohali by local residents and police personnel, but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.The relatives of deceased held dharna outside hospital for not giving timely treatment to victim.
Police officials said they have identified the accused and arrested one of the suspects, while raids are being conducted to nab others involved in the incident.
“A case of murder has been registered and further investigation is underway. The exact sequence of events is being verified with the help of eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage, ” a senior police officer said.
The incident occurred on a day when large numbers of devotees had gathered at temples across the district for Maha Shivratri celebrations, raising concerns over security arrangements in crowded areas.
The victim’s family has demanded strict action against the accused and justice for Gursev Singh. The police have assured that all those involved in the crime will be arrested soon.
