PHAGWARA: Phagwara, October 15: In a brazen attack , two Punjab Police officers were assaulted near City Heart Nagar, Phagwara, leaving one seriously injured on late Tuesday Evening.
The injured officers, Constable Jatinder Singh of the CIA staff and Sub-Inspector Shiv Raj Chahal, were reportedly on their way to Eastwood after receiving reports of firing in the area when a group of assailants intercepted them.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed at City Police Station, Gurpreet Singh, alias Happy, along with six to seven youths armed with sticks, launched the attack. Jatinder Singh sustained multiple injuries, with six documented wounds, and was immediately admitted to Civil Hospital, Phagwara. During the assault, SI Shiv Raj Chahal was also targeted. The officers’ family members were caught in the chaos, with Jatinder Singh’s wife, Jaswinder Kaur, reportedly verbally abused and physically threatened.
When contacted Phagwara S.P. Madhvi Sharma said that the attack may have stemmed from a previous dispute over parking and repeated provocations by the accused. Police have registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including attempt to commit culpable homicide, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and obstructing public servants in the discharge of duty.
Six individuals have been named in the FIR, including Gurpreet Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Bhupinder, Baabu, and two unknown persons. Asst. Sub-Inspector Binder Kumar has been tasked with leading the investigation, while special reports have been forwarded to senior police officers and the local magistrate for further action.
SP Sharma has confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend all suspects involved in the incident. The police have assured the public that stringent measures will be taken once the investigation concludes.
