PHAGWARA: A young man from Kapurthala district has died by suicide after alleged prolonged harassment and betrayal by his wife and her family, according to a complaint lodged with Begowal police.
The complainant, Paramjit Kaur, wife of Avtar Singh and resident of village Ghag, police station Begowal, reported that her son Luvjeet Singh was married on January 23, 2020, to Harmanpreet Kaur, daughter of Baldeep Singh of village Bhagwanpur, district Kapurthala. The marriage was solemnized with Sikh religious customs, and the family claimed to have spent nearly ₹7 lakh on the wedding.
After marriage, Paramjit Kaur’s family allegedly bore expenses of about ₹28 lakh to send Harmanpreet Kaur to Canada for her education. This included tuition fees, living expenses, and cash payments made for her settlement abroad. According to the complaint, during the initial period of her stay overseas, Harmanpreet remained in touch with her husband until she secured a work permit.
The complainant stated that once Harmanpreet obtained the permit, she allegedly called Luvjeet Singh and told him outright that she had no intention of calling him to Canada and no desire to continue their marital relationship. The family claims this left Luvjeet in a state of deep psychological distress.
On the evening of August 30, Luvjeet Singh allegedly consumed a poisonous substance at his home. He could not be saved, and his death has been treated as a case of suicide.
Based on the complaint, police have registered a case under section 306IPC against Harmanpreet Kaur, her father Baldeep Singh, and her mother Surjit Kaur, all residents of Bhagwanpur, district Kapurthala. They have been accused of subjecting Luvjeet Singh to harassment and abetting his suicide.
Police officials confirmed that the FIR no 68 has been registered and the case is under active investigation. Cops are examining financial transactions and other evidence to establish the extent of harassment alleged by the complainant.
