PHAGWARA: An unidentified, partially charred body of a woman was discovered on Friday morning in farmland near Sultanpur Lodhi, triggering a police investigation into a suspected case of murder. According to reports received here today the incident came to light around 10:30 a.m. when Manpreet Singh, a resident of Sultanpur Lodhi and currently farming 11 acres of leased land belonging to Jagdeep Singh of Georgepur, visited the fields to inspect recently sown wheat.
According to the report, Manpreet noticed a burnt female corpse lying near a kutcha path adjoining the field. The body’s hands and one leg were visible while the other leg was missing from the spot. Most parts of the body were severely burnt, but bangles, rings and nail polish still visible on the hands suggested that the victim was a woman. Shocked by the discovery, Manpreet immediately informed the landowner, Jagdeep Singh, who then alerted village sarpanch Sarbjit Singh.
The sarpanch, along with several villagers, reached the spot and subsequently notified the Sultanpur Lodhi police. Initial observations indicated that the woman might have been killed and set on fire by unknown individuals during the previous night. Acting on the information, police registered a case under section 302, 201 IPC against unknown persons and began further investigation to identify the victim and trace the perpetrators.
