AMRITSAR: In a press release issued by the Amritsar court, it was stated that a man has been sentenced to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹40, 000 for raping a five-year-old child.
The case relates to FIR No. 106/2022 registered at Verka police station under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The convict has been identified as Raja, son of Jaspal Singh, a resident of Preet Nagar, Verka, Amritsar.
As per the prosecution case, the accused was a neighbour of the victim. Taking advantage of the absence of the child’s parents, he entered the complainant’s house and sexually assaulted the minor. After evaluating the evidence on record, the court found the accused guilty and awarded the sentence.
The court observed that crimes of sexual violence against children are extremely serious and have a lasting impact on victims. It noted that the sentence was intended to act as a deterrent, conveying a clear message that such offences would be dealt with strictly and that the fear of law must prevail among wrongdoers.
