CHANDIGARH: Punjab and Haryana JHigh Court has refused to accept the arguments of Chandigarh administration for holding election of Chandigarh Mayor after January 26 and ordered to give new date by 10 AM on Wednesday.
The Chandigarh administation has fixed February 6 to hold election of Mayor after it was postponed from January 18. AAP councillor has challenged the order of UT administration. The High Court didnt agree with the administation's logic of law and order problem in city. High Court said that can't administration hold election among the 35 councillors. The court also asked the UT advocate general to tell them how much security they needed to hold the election.
High Court said that they dont understand why Chandigarh administration wants to make Mayoral election another 'Mahabahrat' and they needed 18 days to conduct the election. High Court ordered the authorities to give new date of election by 10 AM tomorrow, else the court will pronounce decision on merit.
It is recalled that AAP and Congress had forged an alliance and became in majority to defeat BJP candidate of Mayor's post. The UT administration had postponed the election on January 18 on filmsy ground that presiding officer has falled sick. AAP and Congress alleged that UT administration is acting under pressure of BJP and the latter is not ready to accept defeat. BJP is electing its Mayor for the last two years.
