International Literacy Day Celebrated at KCET

AMRITSAR : Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Khalsa College of Engineering and Technology celebrated International Literacy Day Today, to raise awareness and concern for literacy. Dr. Manju Bala (Director) while addressing the students said that International Literacy Day was founded with the motive “to remind our students of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights.”

She said that Literacy plays an important role in the economic and social development of a country. It also helps in the socio-economic and cultural development of an area. A literate person is able to contribute to society by building up a good society, better economic infrastructure and better interaction within the nation and also at the global level. Literacy is the main indicator to measure the development of a rural or urban area. She said that it is a matter of disappointment that Punjab, which has fast growing economy ranks 14th as per the current census at all India ranking of literacy. And the literacy rate has declined in Punjab in recent years.

 She urged students that being an educational individual each student should work for those sections of society which are still far away from literacy. Students presented their views and thoughts through poster making on the theme Right to literacy and Education.

Students enthusiastically participated in the event. Simarn of CSE 7th Sem stood first in the competition who presented her view through various quotes on literacy by Nelson Mandela. Second position was grabbed by Atul Sharma of Civil Engineering of 5th Sem while third positin was bagged by Disha Mehra of MLS sem 3rd. Winner students were felicitated with certificates and trophies. Dr. Manju Bala congratulated the winners and team of department of CSE, Dr. Mohit Angurala, Er. Sukhmeet Kaur, Er. Sarbjot Kaur, Er. Vikas along with team of student coordinators Shubham, Diljot and Arshdeep. Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina KCGC Honorary Secretary, appreciated the efforts of Director and her staff for organizing such events that highlight the sensitive issues for the benefit of society
