GNDU Psychology Department Extends Healing Hand to Flood-Affected Children in Malikpur

PUNJAB NEWS EXPRESS | October 07, 2025 01:43 AM

AMRITSAR: The Department of Psychology from Guru Nanak Dev University, in collaboration with NGO Help A Child of India, conducted a psychosocial support session for flood-affected children at Malikpur village, Ajnala according to the directions of Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Karamjeet Singh. The intervention provided crucial mental health support to children still coping with the aftermath of the recent devastating floods.

Led by Dr. Balbinder Singh, Assistant Professor, along with six psychology students, the team engaged with children at the Child Friendly Space established by the NGO. The session focused on helping children process their traumatic experiences through structured activities and psychological first-aid principles.

During the interaction, the team observed that while all children showed signs of trauma, girls exhibited relatively higher anxiety levels than boys. A hopeful discussion emerged when children shared their future aspirations, expressing dreams of becoming army personnel, doctors, and IAS officers - demonstrating remarkable resilience despite their recent hardships.

"This practical engagement provided our students with invaluable experience in trauma-informed care while offering meaningful support to vulnerable children, " said Dr. Balbinder Singh. "It represents our department's commitment to applying psychological science for community welfare."

The collaboration between GNDU and Help A Child of India ensured the "Healing Hearts" programme combined professional expertise with grassroots implementation, creating a comprehensive support system for the flood-affected children of Malikpur.
