Rahul and Mayank fashion six-wicket win for Kings XI Punjab

MOHALI: An authentic 114-run third wicket partnership between opener Lokesh Rahul (71 not out, 53b, 7x4s, 1x6) and Mayank Agarwal (55, 43 b, 3x4s, 3x6s) engineered a well-deserved six-wicket victory for Kings XI Punjab against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the night match of Indian Premier League at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium here in Phase 9. With one ball to spare, Kings XI Punjab replied with 151 for 4 in 19.5 overs. Sunrisers Hyderbad scored 150 for 4 in 20 overs.
With this victory, Kings XI Punjab moved to third position from fifth with eight points. Their net run rate is -0.061. KKR, CSK and KXIP have identical eight points each. Kolkata Knight Raiders (5-4-1, 8 pts) and Chennai Super Kings (5-4-1, 8 pts) are leading the table. KKR are on top with better net run rate (1.058) and CSK are at second spot with net run rate of 0.159.
Chasing a victory target of 151 for their fourth win from six matches, Kings XI lost an early wicket for opener Chris Gayle, who did not made into playing XI against Delhi Capitals here on April 4 night match, made his early exit, caught by Deepak Hooda of the bowling of Rashid Khan. Gayle made 16 from 14 balls and hit one four and one six. His wicket fell at 18 in 3.1 overs.
Rahul and Agarwal defied the SRH bowlers and contributed a match-winning partnership of 114 runs for the second wicket. The partnership virtually turned the table in the match. Mayank Agarwal did enjoy a life was he was dropped by Yusuf Pathan at long on.
Fast bowler Sandeep Sharma broke this partnership when he had Agarwal caught by Vijay Shankar. Sandeep Sharma was the most economical and successful bowler for Sunrisers Hyderbad as he got two wickets for 21 runs in four-over spell. Rashid Khan (1 for 20) was the most economical bowler for SRH.
Mn of the Match Lokesh Rahul hit the winning stroke by getting two runs from the fifth delivery of Mohammad Nabi in the 20th over and went on to remain not out on 71 runs. Rahul remained at the wicket for 104 minutes and executed seven boundaries and one six. His striking rate was 133.96.
This pair carried the total to 132 for 2 in 17.1 overs from 18 for 1 in 3.1 overs.
Kings XI Punjab lost the wickets of David Miller (1) and Mandeep Singh (2) but there was no cause for worry for the home team. The hero of Kings XI Punjab's win against Delhi Capitals in the last match played in Mohali, Sam Curran and Rahul lokesh guided their team to their fourth win in this edition of IPL.
In their quest to score their fourth win in the Indian Premeir League, Kings XI Punjab were 73 for 1 in 10 overs. Opener Lokesh Rahul and Mayank Agarwal were batting on 36 and 31, respectively.
Earlier, boosted by an unbeaten 62-ball 70 by opener David Waren and his unfinished fifth wicket partnership of 55-run for fifth wicket with Deepak Hooda, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 150 for 4 in allotted 20 overs.
Put in to bat by Kings XI Punjab as they preferred to chase the victory target, Sunrisers Hyderabad suffered an early jolt as new ball bowler Mujeeb Ur Rahman removed wicket-keeper-opener Jonny Bairshow, who was caught by Ravichandran Ashwin. Bairstow could contribute only one run and his wickek fell at 7 in 1.4 overs.
New comer Vijay Shankar and Warner stitched a 49-run partnership for the second wicket before Shankar was caught by wicketkeeper Lokesh Rahul of the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin with scorecard reading 56 for 2 in 10.4 overs. Shankar made 26 from 27 deliveries and hit two fours.
Coming at No. four Mohammad Nabi compiled 12 runs before he was run out by Ravichandran Ashwin. His exit was at 80 for 3 in 13.2 overs. Manish Padey returned to the dressing room after making 19 runs from 15 balls and slammed two boundaries. He was caught by substitute fielder KK Nair of the bowling of Mohammed Shami.
Waren, who was going strong by hitting the bowlers all over, and Deepak Hooda took the score to 150 for 4 in 20 overs. They were associated in an unbeaten 55 runs partnership for unbroken fifth wicket stand. Hooda displayed his offensive mood and he made unbeaten 14 from just three deliveries and slammed four powerful boundaries and two soaring sixes.
At the other end David Waren played a solid unbeaten knock of 70 runs from 62 balls. Durinder his 103-minute vigil at the wicket, he executed six well-timed boundaries and one six. He recorded a striking rate of 112.9.
For Kings XI Punjab, Mujeeb Ur Rahman (1 for 34), Mohammed Shami (1 for 30) and Ravichandran Ashwin (1 for 30) were the wicket-takers.
