CHANDIGARH: Hectic lobbying is going on in Punajb Congress and BJP for securing ticket for the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat where by-election will be held on October 11. The seat fell vacated after demise of BJP MP Vindo Khanna.

The BJP and Congress are in quandary over selection of candidate while Aam Aadmi Party is not shiowing any desperation over the issue. The AAP has taken principle decision to field a local candidate, the other two parties are divided over fielding local candidate.

Kavita Khanna wife of late Vinod Khanna has staked claim for the party ticket on the ground that her husband had won the seat three times in a row and she is right person to carry over the legecy of Khanna. Swarn Salaria who runs several busiensses in Mumbai has also staked claim for the ticket being a local resident. The state BJP unit has authorised party president Amit Shah to take final decision.

The things are complex in Congress party as the family of Rajya Sabha MP Partap Singh Bajwa has demanded ticket for Bajwa's wife former MLA Charanjit Kaur Bajwa who vacated Quadian seat for her brother-n-law(husband's brother) Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa. Though Partap Singh Bajwa has not spoke yet openly, Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa has sought party ticket for brother's wife. Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh is keen to field PPCC president Sunil Jakhar from Gurdaspur. The local MLAs however oppose the move on the ground that Jakhar is an outsider and would not be accepted by locals. Capt Amarinder Singh understood to have recommended the name of Jakhar to the party high command.

Bajwa who is considered close to Rahul Gandhi and Ahmed Patel MP and former advisor of AICC president Sonia Gandhi is lobbying hard for the party ticket to his wife. Bajwa family has its strong clout in the constituency. An arch rival of Partap Singh Bajwa, the cabinet minister Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa is also lobbyuing for party ticket to his son Ravi Nandan Singh Bajwa.

The Gurdaspur by-election will also be litmus test for Capt Amarinder Singh government formed six months back. Capt Government is facing lot of criticism for failing to stop suicides by farmers, providing employment and not fulfulling promises like hiking old age pension to Rs.2500 PM and lowering stamp duty on land registration to 6 percent. The Congress has also faced flak on the issue of alleged connivance of power minister Rana Gurjit Singh in the sand mining scam.

Capt Amarinder Singh is the only hope for the Congress party who is still a mass leader and enjoys confidence of people of Punjab. The party had won the 2017 assembly election due to popularity of Capt Amarinder Singh. The result of Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-poll will be landmark in the Punajb politics.
