Cycle to School campaign on Children Day

CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh Cycling kick off the Cycle to School campaign on the occasion of celebration of Children Day. The Cycle to School initiative is first Indian campaign initiated by Dr. Rakesh Mohindra founder President of Chandigarh Cycling and recently designated Bicycling Mayor of Chandigarh by BYCS a global social enterprise working on 50by30 referring half of the city trips by bicycle by 2030 all over world.

Cycle to School campaign will provide a bicycling curriculum to kids for safe bicycling, traffic rules and bicycling etiquette. It will include workshops on safe cycling and repairing. Most of the public schools will be covered in first phase to gather data and to measure the impact and to make a regular policy to provide bicycling solutions to safe school commuting. Chandigarh Cycling is identifying special bicycling corridors which are being used by the schools kids to reach the schools.

Cycle to School campaign started from Ankur Sr. Secondary School, Panjab University, which already meeting that norm as majority of the students are commuting to school on bicycle. The school students covered  more than 70000 km is a month, which shows how much fuel saved and helped to stop vehicular pollution.  

After listening the stories of the students from Class 6th, 10th, who are bicycling to school shared their personal experience of happiness and few obstructs and echoed that bicycling is very convenient, give freedom, confidence, quick and economical to commute to school.

Most of the students acknowledged that bicycling is healthy and help to improve personality in addition to curb pollution around. Many of the students are commuting more than 20 km every day and feel that they are well exposed to real-time situations and cherished city cycling tracks.

On Children Day celebrations five regular cyclist students selected Gaganpreet Singh, Tanmay, Ishita, Ashvi and Harpreet were nominated as Bicycling Champions by the Chandigarh Cycling and felicitated with mementos by the Principal Parminder Kaur and Dr. Rakesh Mohindra.

 During the ceremony school teacher Ms. Pooja who commute on bicycle was honored as Bicycling Ambassador. Every week a school will be covered under the cycle to school campaign to bring in more bicycling champion to motivate more students to adopt bicycling. There would be interschool analysis to monitor the progress of more kids on bicycling.
