Prajnesh and Yuki win first round qualifying, Ramkumar loses

CHANDIGARH: Prajnesh Gunneswaran and Yuki Bhambri won their respective first round qualifying matches while Ramkumar Ramanathan was beaten in the Australian Open Tennis Championship in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Prajnesh Gunneswaran defeated Daniel Elahi Galan of Colombia 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 13 minutes. Prajnesh won the first set after breaking his rival in the third game. In the second set the Indian player got the vital break in the first game. Prajnesh overcame a late challenge from Galon and wrapped up the set 6-4, saving a breakpoint in the 10th game.
Prajnesh's opponent in the second round qualifying is Maximilian Marterer of Germany.
Yuki Bhambri took 68 minutes to dispose of the challenge of Joao Domingues (Portugal) by 6-4, 6-2. Bhambri won the first set by breaking his rival in the seventh game. Maintaining pressure, Bhambri broke Domingues in the 5th and 7th games to claim the second set and match.
Bhambri next faces Tomas Machao of Czech Republic.
Ramkumar Ramanathan lost his qualifying match to Gion Marco Moroni of Italy who won 6-3, 7-5.
