Fundamental changes required to mitigate natural disasters: Suresh Bhardwaj

SHIMLA: Urban Development Minister Suresh Bhardwaj today presided over the webinar on Sustainable and Safe Hilly Area Development with focus on earthquake, landslide and floods. The webinar was organized jointly by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) and the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA).

Suresh Bhardwaj said that more than 58 percent of the world's landmass and about 21 states and four union territories of the country are susceptible to natural disaster. Areas of the Himalayan regions and the Western Ghats are among the highly landslide affected areas. Himachal Pradesh is also very prone to natural disaster. He said that during the time of disaster with immediate relief and rescue work damages to life and property could be reduced. The National Institute of Disaster Management and the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority together are making every possible effort to mitigate these hazards and risks.

Suresh Bhardwaj said that NIDM is playing vital role in providing information and training related to disaster management to people. He said that to reduce the risk of these natural disasters, we have to fundamental changes in our plans.

He said that by organizing such webinar would help us in developing such projects in the Himalayan region to mitigate and reduce the chances recurring disaster.

Executive Director, National Institute of Disaster Management Major General Manoj Kumar Bindal, former Cabinet Secretary, Government of India Ajit Seth, Member, Advisory Board, NDMA  P.P. Srivastava, Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan Dr. Anil Prakash Joshi, Director (HPSDMA) and Special Secretary Revenue-Disaster Management D.C. Rana and Head, GMR Division, NIDM Prof. Surya Prakash also presented their  views during webinar.
