CHANDIGARH: Manjit Singh Ghasitpur President of Tarn Taram district unit of Congress party today resigned from his post and party in protest against inaction against accused liquor smugglers responsible for hooch tragdy that claimed 120 lives.

Ghasitpur has said that illicit liquor was still being sold in Tarn Tarn district and no action was taken against the real culprits. He said that he could not live in a party which is responsible for deaths of so many people.

Rubbishing his claims as utterly pompous, false, laughable and motivated, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister Captain Sandeep Sandhu has termed Manjit Singh Ghasitpur's 'resignation' from district Congress president Tarn Taran as drama, for the DCC unit was already dissolved four months ago for restructuring.

How can one resign from a post one does not hold, Sandhu quipped, reacting to Ghasitpur's 'resignation' letter. Terming his acts as politically motivated, the senior Congress leader said his claims of seeking time for meeting with the Chief Minister were also fallacious and untruthful.

The Chief Minister had himself visited Tarn Taran and met all the leaders there, Sandhu said asserting Ghasitpur never sought time for any meeting. He is free to decide his own course but must refrain from making unfounded allegations for forwarding his narrow political agenda at behest of opposition, Sandhu added.

State government is doing everything possible to eradicate illegal liquor trade and strictest action is being ensured against anyone found involved in this heinous crime, Sandhu said reacting to his manufactured allegations in the letter.

One certainly does not need advice from an ignorant Ghasitpur who does not even know what actions have been initiated by Police and administration to weed out this menace from the state, Sandhu added.
