SGPC on String (taanti saaj) Instruments in Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib

AMRITSAR: Attempts have been made by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to perform Gurbani Kirtan with string instruments (, taanti saaaj) in the traditional style at Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib Sri Darbar Sahib.

In this regard the President of the Shiromani Committee Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has asked the students undergoing kirtan training in the Gurmat Sangeet Vidyalayas and Missionary Colleges run by the Dharam Prachar Committee to make the practice of string instruments compulsory.
Shiromani Committee Deputy Secretary Media Giving information about this, Kulwinder Singh Ramdas said that Giani Harpreet Singh, Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib has sent a gurmata to the Shiromani Committee on May 3, 2022 during a gathering of Panj Singh Sahibs in which he spent 3 years at Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib. It has been ordered to implement string instruments during kirtan during the period.
He said that in this regard the President of the SGPC Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has also appealed to the ragi jathas to practice string instruments and also string instruments in Gurmat Missionary Colleges and Gurmat Sangeet Vidyalayas while preparing new ragi jathas.
It has also been asked to make arrangements for teachers. Mr. Ramdas said that at present the Shiromani Committee already has some Jathas performing kirtan with string instruments and it will be expanded in future. He said that although in the past Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib has been serving stringed instruments with ragi jathas, but Shiromani Committee President Advocate Dhami took the orders of Jathedar Sri Akal Takht Sahib seriously and in future would give priority to stringed instruments during kirtan.
