Punjab Police recovers 10.4 Kg heroin from a car in Amritsar, accused escapes

AMRITSAR: In a major blow to trans-border narcotic smuggling networks amidst the ongoing drive to eradicate drugs from the state, Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence Amritsar successfully intercepted two suspicious vehicles near Village Sukhewala in Amritsar, resulting in the seizure of 10.4kg of heroin from Maruti Baleno car, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Saturday.

However, the accused identified as Sukhraj Singh, owner of the Baleno car and alleged supplier of the heroin consignment, managed to flee from the spot along with his accomplice in his Mahindra Scorpio car (without registration number). Police teams have impounded the Baleno car, bearing registration number PB46AG1224, containing the illicit drugs on the spot.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said that following an intel-input about exchange of heroin consignment between occupants of these two cars, Police teams from CI Amritsar led by DSP CI Navtej Singh managed to locate both the cars stationed on the roadside near Indian Oil Petrol Pump near Village Sukhewala, Amritsar, while, drivers of both the vehicles were discussing something standing near the Scorpio car.

He said that on seeing the police party, both the accused persons managed to escape from the spot in the Mahindra Scorpio car, while, leaving their other Baleno car stationed there. On checking of the Baleno car, Police teams have recovered the heroin consignment, Rs 1000 cash, photocopies of Aadhar Card and Voter ID card of Sukhraj Singh from the car.

The DGP said that preliminary investigation suggests that accused Sukhraj Singh was to deliver the heroin consignment to the occupant of Scorpio car. Efforts are being made identify his other associate, he added.

He said that raids are being conducted to nab both of the absconders. Further investigation is going on to establish backward and forward linkages in this case, he added.

In this regard, a case FIR No. 61 dated 11-10-2024 has been registered under sections 21, 25 and 29 of the NDPS at Police Station State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), Amritsar.
