AMRITSAR: Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, President, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, has asked the Punjab Government to make serious efforts to prevent the transfer of Panjab University Chandigarh from being a Central University.
He said that the interests of Punjab should have been taken up in the Hon'ble High Court regarding Panjab University in which the Punjab government was failing.
He said that Panjab University should not become a central university at any cost and Punjab government needs to be serious in this matter. The government should take up the matter in consultation with senior advocates so that the heritage of Punjab is preserved.
SGPC President said that earlier the anti-Punjab decision of the Union government to impose service rules on the employees of Chandigarh had come to light and now in the case of making Panjab University a central university this university seems to be missing from Punjab. .
He said that encroachment on the rights and interests of Punjab was not to be tolerated and hence the Punjab Government was serious about the concerns of Punjab.
General Secretary and Spokesperson of Shiromani Akali Dal (United) Mr. Manjeet Singh Bhoma while giving his strong response to the suggestion of Hon'ble Punjab and Haryana High Court to make Punjab University Chandigarh a Central University, said that Punjab University Chandigarh has a deep history with Punjab. At the time of partition of the country, Punjab got only one Punjab University in exchange for Lahore, the capital of Punjab. Which was later established at Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab. This Panjab University Chandigarh is the pride, glory and great heritage of Punjab. It represents the heartfelt sentiments of the people of Punjab. Transforming it into a central university would be a major blow to the interests of Punjab. The greatness of this Panjab University Chandigarh is spread all over the world.
Meanwhile Mr Manjit Singh Bhoma general secretary Shiromani Akali Dal {United) said that the Center had already lost its capital, water dams and power from Punjab. . Thousands of students from Punjab study at Panjab University. Mr. Bhoma said that Panjab University has preserved the heritage of Punjab. Therefore, the members of the Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University and all the professors and employees should rise above their personal interests and cherish this great heritage with loyalty. He said that the central government should not only transform the Panjab University into a central university but also make it financially stronger and the legitimate demands of the professors and employees of the university should be met immediately.
He further said that he had strongly demanded the Union Government to set up a Central University at Amritsar in Punjab. But the heritage Panjab University attached to Punjab should not be transferred to Central University but its Vice Chancellor should be from Punjab.
