AMRITSAR: Majitha police have arrested Kanchanpreet Kaur Randhawa, a Canadian citizen and daughter of Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate from Tarn Taran, on allegations of entering India illegally and providing false information related to her passport. She ws earlier booked for disrupting police during Tarn Taran bye-election.
Police said Randhawa was detained after officers flagged discrepancies in her travel documents during verification. According to investigators, she did not follow the legal immigration route while arriving in India and allegedly furnished incorrect details in connection with her passport or travel records. Police said they are examining how she entered the country and whether any procedural or document tampering took place.
Authorities added that further investigation is underway, and formal charges will be considered once evidence is compiled. Officials are also scrutinising her passport history and any prior entries into India. If offences under the Passports Act are confirmed, she may face criminal charges for misrepresentation or concealment of information. She had also approached Punjab and Haryana High Court for anticipatory bail but court denied her relief.
The case has generated attention due to Randhawa’s political family background, though police maintained the investigation is being conducted strictly on legal grounds. Chandanpreet Kaur was seen canvassing for her mother and went underground before police could arrest her. SSP Amritsar(rural) who was reportedly given the responsibility to arrest here was later suspended.
SAD president Sukhbir Singh Randhawa has condemned the action of Punjab Police and described it a case of political vendetta. He said that she belinged to a dharmi Fauzi family. She had a child of two and a half years.
