Farmers can get higher income by cultivating peas - Dinesh Kumar Nodal Officer Peas (Punjab)

NAWANSHAHR: A processing unit named AS Frozen, at village Nagra of Banga block of the district with the help of Ministry of Food Processing, Govt.  of India, has been established.  Nodal Officer, Peas, Punjab  Dinesh Kumar, Deputy Director Horticulture, SAS Nagar, while visiting the unit today said that the capacity of this unit is 2.5 MT per hour for freezing of peas and 2200 MT for storage of peas. Karamjit Singh, a partner of the unit, informed that the work of freezing peas at the unit would start from December 15 this year.  He appealed to all the farmers of Punjab that from 15th January 2021 peas would be procured from the farmers at the rate of Rs. 15 per kg.  Interested farmers can enter into a written agreement with them in this regard.  Therefore the main crop of peas should be sown from 15th October to 10th November.  For it the prevalent variety P-89 can be sown.  He further said that seed of another suitable variety of peas named 'Saloni' is also available at the rate of Rs. 225 per kg.  This seed is required only 20 kg per acre and its average yield is 80-90 kg per acre.  Horticulture Development Officer Paramjit Singh was also present. Jagdish Singh Kahma, Assistant Director Horticulture-cum-Assistant Nodal Officer, Peas (Punjab) appealed to the farmers of the district to sign the contract for sowing the main season peas and get more income from the wheat crop.  Sowing peas also increases soil fertility, he said.
