Farm ordinances-Harsimrat Badal resigns from Modi cabinet, to stay in NDA

CHANDIGARH: Harsimrat Kaur Badal Union Minister of food and wife of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal has resigned from Union cabinet in protest against three farm ordinances. The Shiromani Akali Dal however will stay part of National Democratic Alliance.

Sukhbir Singh Badalhad announced about resignation of his wife in the Lok Sabha. He said that SAD cant be part of government which is against the farmers. SAD was earlier supporting the central farm ordinaces but it made a U-turn and decided to oppose the bills on protect its base in Punjab.


Opposition parties in Punjab including AAP and ruling party Congress were opposing the central ordinaces. The BJP led by Narender Modi has presented the three bills in parliament despite opposition by farmer organisations and political parties. The SAD MPs had voted against the bills.

Sukhbir Badal saide that corporates would control the agricuture sector and they will exploit farmers. He said that union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal had raised the issue in cabinet meeting and registered concerns of farmers. He said that SAD is party of farmers and cant approve the anti-farmer bills.

Resignation of Harsimrat Kaur Badal and opposition of bills could be strategy of SAD to revive its lost base among peasantary in Punjab. The people of Punjab had rejected SAD in last assembly elections due to allegation of running drug and mining mafia in state.
