PHAGWARA: In response to the rising water levels in the Beas River, the Drainage Department has intensified efforts to protect the Dhussi Bunds in the region from potential flood damage. Over the past ten days, more than 50, 000 bags of soil have been placed at critical points along the bunds to reinforce their stability.

Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal has confirmed that the Drainage Department is actively monitoring water flow, with hourly reports being submitted regarding the water inflow. In parallel, significant work is underway to strengthen vulnerable areas of the bunds.

According to Sartaj Singh, Executive Engineer of the Drainage Department, the Dhussi Bunds in the Kapurthala district are completely safe and secure, with no immediate threat to their integrity. He further explained that the department has placed over 50, 000 soil bags in the last ten days to safeguard sensitive spots along the bunds.

Work is ongoing in the Bhulath sub-division, specifically in the Mansoorwal and Miani Bhagoopuria areas, where additional reinforcement measures are being implemented. SDO Sukhpal Singh overseeing the area reported that after heavy rainfall, concerns arose about water seepage near Miani Bhagoopuria. To address this, the bund slope has been reinforced, and soil bags have been arranged in crate formations at the most vulnerable spots.

In the Kapurthala sub-division, SDO Khushvinder Singh mentioned that strengthening efforts are underway at Pirewal and Dhalewal Bet, with soil bags forming protective barriers along these areas.

Further strengthening measures have been put in place near Khijarpur in Sultanpur Lodhi, where a 1, 200-foot stretch of the Dhussi Bund has been reinforced using soil bags.

SDO Vijay Kumar, overseeing work near Nabipur and Bharwana, confirmed that wire crates are being installed near Nabipur, while local villagers have assisted in filling and placing soil bags near Bharwana.

The Drainage Department continues to monitor the situation closely and remains on high alert to ensure the safety and stability of the Dhussi Bunds as floodwaters continue to rise.
