Dalbir Kaur sister of Sarabjit Singh passes away

AMRITSAR: Dalbir Kaur 67, sister of Indian national and martyr Sarabjit Singh died here on Sunday. As per her family, she had complained of severe chest pain on Saturday night, hospitalized forthwith in the private Ohri Hospital in Amritsar, where she breathed her last.

Poonam, daughter of Sarabjit Singh confirming the death on phone said that she was already suffering from lung infections for the past one year. On Sunday night she developed severe chest pain. The moment she was admitted in the hospital where doctors described her condition critical and shifted to ICU, where after a few minutes at 11.00 p.m she was put on a ventilator (life support system) , she said.

Adding further Poonam said that as per doctors she was not responding to the treatment due to severe lung infection followed by multiple organs failure. She was declared dead by the hospital at 1.00 a.m midnight.

Poonam said that her last rites to performed in the afternoon today at her native Bikhiwind the border village of Punjab.

Dalbir Kaur's brother Sarabjit Singh was convicted by a Pakistani court for terrorism and espionage cases. He was sentenced to death in 1991. Later in 2008, the Pakistan government had indefinitely stayed the execution of Sarabjit when political pressure was mounted by the Indian Government on Pakistan’s Government through diplomatic channel.

Dalbir Kaur had made aggressive die -hard efforts to get her brother out of prison, and fought a long struggle from India to Pakistan. She visited twice in the Kot Lakpat Rai Jail in Lahore to enquire about the wellbeing of Sarbjit Singh along with the family members including two daughters and wife of Sarbjit Singh.

However, Sarabjit was killed in April 2013 when attacked by the Pakistani jail inmates inside the prison. He received fatal injuries in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail April 26 when he was brutally assaulted by fellow prisoners with bricks and sharp-edged articles.

Sarbjit’s last rites were performed at his native village Bikhwind which were attended by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, the then Punjab Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal. The 49-year-old Sarabjit was accorded a state funeral. He was declared dead in Lahore's Jinnah Hospital. His body was brought in a special Air India flight from Lahore to Amritsar.
