SGPC Chief Condemns CM’s Statement, Calls It Arrogant and Baseless
AMRITSAR : Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami on Saturday strongly condemned Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s recent remark referring to the SGPC as the "Shiromani Golak Parbandhak Committee". Dhami termed the statement as deeply offensive, factually baseless, and a deliberate attempt to insult the apex Sikh religious body.
“This is not just a verbal jibe, but a desecration of the most revered religious institution of the Sikh community. The Chief Minister’s comment reflects his intellectual bankruptcy and political arrogance, ” said Dhami.
He said the SGPC has a rich legacy of service, sacrifice, and social commitment. “The Akali movement, under whose vision SGPC evolved, not only fought for Sikh rights but also played a crucial role in India’s freedom struggle and in defending constitutional values during periods like the Emergency, ” Dhami added.
Reacting to the insinuation that SGPC mishandles funds, Dhami said, “It is ironic that Bhagwant Mann talks about ‘Golak’. The truth is, Punjab is being looted under his own watch, with resources and public properties being handed over to outsiders under the influence of Delhi.”
Highlighting SGPC’s contribution, Dhami said the Committee is not just a religious body but a vital institution in the fields of education and social welfare. “With limited resources, we’ve established around 100 educational institutions across Punjab, including medical and engineering colleges. Financial assistance is regularly provided to students from poor and backward communities, ” he said.
Dhami also pointed to the SGPC’s humanitarian role during crises. “Whether it was the oxygen langar during the Covid pandemic or aid during natural disasters, the SGPC has consistently stood by the people. Our role during the farmers’ protest was exemplary and responsible, ” he said.
He added that the SGPC has always worked to uphold humanity, ethics, and spiritual values, launching various campaigns to connect people with these principles.
Dhami urged CM Bhagwant Mann to “rise above petty politics” and stop targeting religious institutions for political mileage. “Instead of insulting institutions revered by the Sikh Panth, the Chief Minister should concentrate on addressing Punjab’s serious challenges and governance failures, ” he concluded.
