Water level in Ranjit Sagar Dam down by 69 feet

CHANDIGARH: The water levels in Ranjit Sagar Dam and Bhakra Dam are less by 69 feet , 30 feet respectively corresponding to the level on the corresponding day.

There has been a decline of 14 per cent during the last winter in the snow cover in the river basins of the Chenab, Ravi, Beas and the Sutlej in the Himalayas.Bhakra reservoir gets most of its water with melting of snow during summer.

. This year due to the long heatwaves period ending June and scattered rainfall in the region the power demand and supply is more as compared to last year.RSD has been running all four units during day time.

The water level in Bhakra Dam, Ranjit Sagar Dam reservoirs are important for irrigation and power generation requirements of the region.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) weekly report of July 11 states , the water level in Bhakra reservoir is 37% of live capacity at full reservoir level down by 19% , while it was 56% last year. At Bhakra Dam that lies on the Sutlej in Himachal, the water level is 1597.20 feet against the last year level of 1627.90 feet .This is about 30 feet less than the water level on the corresponding day last year. As per daily report the Bhakra inflow is 33638 cusecs while it was 105949 cusecs last year.

Ranjit sagar Dam project current storage level is 31% against last year storage level of 80%, . The normal storage level is 53%. The water level at Ranjit Sagar Dam that lies on the Ravi in Punjab is 1644 feet against the last year level of 1713.5 feet. The maximum permissible level of the Dam is 1731.5 feet. The water inflow on Friday was 9785 cusecs while it was -40855 cusecs on last year's corresponding day.

At Pong Dam the water storage level is 24% against 67% last year. The current storage at Pong Dam at 1315.2 feet is 48 feet lower than last year's level of 1363.4- feet on the corresponding day.
