Chairperson of Punjab State Commission for Women Visits Central Jail Amritsar

AMRITSAR: The Chairperson of the Punjab State Commission for Women, Mrs. Raj Lali Gill, visited the Central Jail Amritsar to assess the conditions and facilities provided to women prisoners. During her visit, Mrs. Gill emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups and the provision of legal, medical, and educational services for the women inmates. She urged jail officials to continuously inspect and improve these facilities.

Mrs. Gill attentively listened to the concerns of the women prisoners and assured them that their legitimate issues would be addressed promptly. Some prisoners highlighted the prolonged inaction on their undertrial cases, to which Mrs. Gill responded by requesting a detailed report to expedite the judicial process. She reiterated that addressing their problems is a priority for the commission.

Apart from this, Mrs. Gill reviewed the products made by women prisoners, including suits, children's toys and teddy bears, praising the prison administration for this initiative, which she noted boosts the morale of the inmates. She also distributed gifts to the children of the women prisoners.

Chairman of the Child Commission, Mr. Kanwardeep Singh, directed the jail administration to ensure that all necessary facilities are provided to the children of the women prisoners.

The visit included a thorough inspection of the hospital, kitchen, library, and various barracks, as well as a review of the food prepared in the Langar Hall. Both Mrs. Gill and Mr. Singh expressed satisfaction with the cleanliness and food provisions in the jail. However, Mrs. Gill pointed out a few deficiencies in the hospital equipment and instructed the concerned officers to address these issues immediately.

Jail Superintendent Mr. Anurag Kumar Azad provided a detailed account of the jail's capacity and current inmate statistics. The Amritsar Central Jail has a capacity for 260 women prisoners and currently houses 183, including 22 sentenced prisoners, 153 undertrial prisoners, 5 foreigners, 1 foreign accused and 2 undertrial foreigners. Additionally, there are 8 children of women prisoners in the ladies' ward.

Following the jail visit, Mrs. Raj Lali Gill and Mr. Kanwardeep Singh paid obeisance at Sri Darbar Sahib. Deputy Superintendent Security GS Brar, Deputy Superintendent Jail Mr. Shyamal Jyoti, Deputy Director Rupinder Kaur, Deputy Director Rajwinder Singh Gill and other jail staff members were also present during the visit
