Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa cremated in Amritsar

AMRITSAR: Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa who passed away on Sunday after prolonged illness was cremated at cremation grounds near Gurdwara Baba Deep Singh here on Monday in the presence of large number of artists and people. She was 77 years age.

Earlier there was no one from District administration but later Deputy Commissioner reached the cremation ground.
Puran Chand Wadali, Satinder Satti, Jaswant Singh Jas president Amritsar Culture Manch and many other artists attended the cremation and paid tributes to departed soul.

Kirpal Singh Bawa husband of Mrs Gurmeet Kaur Bawa demanded from Punjab government a suitable Memorial should be constructed on the name of Gurmeet Kaur Bawa. The Deputy Commissioner assured him that Punjab government will take necessary steps to built suitable Memorial.

The singer was known for her long ‘hek’ that she could hold for about 45 seconds. She was one of the singers known for singing Jugni after Alam Lohar.

She has been the recipient of various awards and accolades, such as the Shiromani Gayika Award by the Punjab Language Department, National Devi Ahilya Award and the State Award by the Punjab Government, among others.Amritsar Culture Manch expressed grave sorrow over the death of Gurmeet Kaur Bawa.
