CHAMKAUR SAHIB: Newly appointed Punjab Congress president Navjot Sidhu in his maiden press conference at Chamkaur Sahib near here said that he was committed to farmer's cause and pledged full support to the agitation launched by Samyukat Kisan Morcha.
Accompanied by Technical Education minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Sidhu paid obeisance at historic Gurdwaras at Chamkaur Sahib and interacted with the party workers. He got a rousing welcome en route to Chanmkaur Sahib.
Sidhu said that he would go barefoot to the farmers and ask them how the power of the state government and the Congress party could strengthen the farmers' agitation. He said that for him farmers agitation was a very sacred affair and he knew farmers were fighting to saveguard the constitution of the country. He added that he black flag of protest to support farmers is hoisted on top of his house in Amritsar from the very beginning.
Farmers show flack flags
A small group of farmers today raised slogans against Punjab Congress President and showed him black flags when he arrived here to pay obeisance. Farmers were protesting against alleged objectionable remarks by Sidhu that thirsty walks to the well during his speech at Chandigarh yesterday.
Sidhu later clarified that his comments were misunderstood and presented in the wrong perspective. He said that he has high regards for the farmers and supports them with heart and soul. He said that he would walk barefoot to meet the farmers.
Sidhu said that he would work to implement the 18 point programme of Congress which is now called the Punjab model of governance. He asserted that Punjab model would defeat the so called Gujarat and Delhi models. He said that for him the issue of sacrilege of Guru Grnath Sahib was always a priority. He said that out government has to tell people who are the people behind drugs and why we are buying power at rates between Rs. 7 to 18 per unit while power is available at Rs.2 per unit. He said that rates of solar power were declining 20 percent each year but in Punjab it is on the rise.
Sidhu said that he would not compromise on issues and will become the voice of every Punjabi.
