PHAGWARA: In response to a state-level protest call given by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), party workers and local leaders staged a demonstration in Phagwara on Wednesday, expressing strong opposition to the BJP-led Central Government’s alleged interference in Punjab’s water resources.

Led by Harji Mann, AAP Punjab Spokesperson, the protestors gathered outside the Rest House in Phagwara and burnt an effigy symbolizing the Central Government. The demonstration was aimed at denouncing what AAP claims is undue pressure being mounted on Punjab by the Centre through the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to release additional water to Haryana.

Talking to journalists here today, Harji Mann accused the Central Government of acting against the interests of Punjab. “We will not tolerate any injustice to Punjab’s water rights. The Centre’s attempt to force Punjab to release more water to Haryana through BBMB is unconstitutional and unacceptable, ” he said.

Party members raised slogans demanding fair treatment for Punjab and called on the state government to resist any external pressure regarding inter-state water sharing.
