Keep proper record of medical treatment: PMC chief

PATIALA: The 19th annual conference of Punjab Academy of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (PAFMAT), a state body of forensic medicine and medico legal experts, was organized by the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology in the Government Medical College here on the theme `New Challenges in Medico-Legal Practice’.

Inaugurating the conference President of Punjab Medical Council Dr. AS Sekhon as the Chief Guest said proper recording and record keeping of the treatment given by the doctors to their patients is most of the times incomplete but most important part of the medical practice and teaching on medical record keeping to the medical students must be a part of the medical teaching curriculum in the interest of the patients and the doctors themselves.

Lauding the role and contribution of forensic medicine experts dealing with living and dead medico legal cases during the Covid-19 pandemic, President of the Punjab Academy of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Dr. DS Bhullar in his presidential address said the Department of Health and Family Welfare in Punjab had recently created 31 new posts of district forensic medicine experts which will in the long run help to improve the medico legal services in the state but there is also the need to set up one-stop centres in all state run medical colleges to provide integrated support to women affected by violence, both in private and public spaces under one roof.

Director Research and Medical Education Punjab Dr. Avnish Kumar, Registrar, Punjab Medical Council and Joint DRME Punjab Dr. Akash Deep Aggarwal, Director Principal Medical College Dr. Harjinder Singh, College Vice-Principal Dr. Raminderpal Singh Sibia and Medical Superintendent Rajindra Hospital Dr. Harnam Singh Rekhi participating in the conference, also shared their views with release of the scientific journal of the academy.

Dr. Preetinder Singh Chahal from Government College Patiala bagged the Young Forensic Medicine Award of the year while Dr. Ajay Kumar from AIIMS Bathinda and Dr. Ashok Chanana from Amritsar were given PAFMAT Fellowship and Lifetime Achievement Awards respectively.

More than 100 forensic medicine experts and delegates from Punjab and the adjoining states participated in the conference with wide deliberations in the field of forensic medicine.
