CHANDIGARH: Punjab Police have arrested the parents of Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar in connection with a ransom and death threat case registered in Sri Muktsar Sahib district.

An official said Shamsher Singh, son of Gurbaksh Singh, and his wife Preetpal Kaur, residents of Adesh Nagar in Sri Muktsar Sahib, were taken into custody on Monday. The arrests were made in an FIR registered on December 3, 2024, under Sections 308(4), 351(1) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The case was registered on the complaint of a resident of Udhekaran village, who has been working in the education department for the past 33 years. The complainant alleged that on November 27, 2024, while on official duty at a school, he received a WhatsApp call from a foreign number between 10.30 am and 11 am. The caller identified himself as a member of the Bambiha gang and demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh.

The caller allegedly threatened to kill the complainant and his family if the money was not paid, claiming to have complete information about his family members and residence on Kotkapura Road. The complainant further stated that he received multiple similar threatening calls throughout the day, leaving him extremely frightened.

According to the complaint, on December 3, 2024, the victim again received a WhatsApp call from the same foreign number while travelling from his village to his workplace. He did not answer the call due to fear and remained mentally disturbed throughout the day. After consulting his family, he approached the Sadar Police Station, Sri Muktsar Sahib, along with his brother and sought strict legal action.

Confirming the arrests, Sri Muktsar Sahib Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhimanyu Rana said Goldy Brar’s parents were arrested from Amritsar, where they were staying at a hotel near Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple).

“When the FIR was registered, the Bambiha gang and Goldy Brar were working together, ” the SSP said, adding that the accused were arrested as they allegedly had no legitimate source of income and were living off money obtained through ransom.
