CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has come down heavily on the Ferozepur police and district administration, directing the Deputy Commissioner to personally ensure that all bail bond formalities for Gurpreet Singh Sekhon are completed without delay. The Court also ordered his immediate release from custody.
The directive was issued by Justice Sanjay Vashisth while hearing a petition filed by Sekhon’s mother, Kulbir Kaur Sekhon, who alleged that her son was being held illegally at Kulgari Police Station, Ferozepur. Her counsel submitted that the family has an ongoing political dispute with the village sarpanch, Mandeep Singh, who is aligned with the ruling party.
According to the petition, despite the bail being ready for submission, the SDM Ferozepur sent Gurpreet Singh Sekhon to jail on December 12 on the pretext that he had not furnished surety bonds. It was further claimed that Sekhon’s lawyer, who was present outside the court with the required documents, was not permitted to enter and complete the process.
Taking a serious view of the alleged obstruction and delay, the High Court instructed the Ferozepur Deputy Commissioner to either personally oversee or appoint a responsible officer to ensure the immediate completion of bail procedures.
The Court cautioned that any further delay in Sekhon’s release would be treated as a violation of his fundamental rights and warned that strict action would follow against any official found responsible for non-compliance.
