Chandigarh-Punjab Journalists Union observes National Press Day

CHANDIGARH:The Chandigarh-- Punjab Union of Journalists has also observed the day here
on Tuesday.
While observing the day, its president, Mr Vinod Kohli has also suggested that the
name of Press Council of India might be changed to Media Council of India so that
journalists of electronic media could also be included in the council that in turn expand its
horizon to protect the interest of the free press.
The president of the union has also condemned the action of the Tripura authority in
arresting two journalists and demanded their immediate release.
During its observation of the National Press Day, the union has also brought to the
notice of the Punjab Government about non-formation of Press Accreditation Committee
since long time and demanded the Punjab Government to form the committee immediate so
that journalists working in Chandigarh and Punjab can get accreditation helping them to
discharge their official duties well.
While speaking on the occasion, Mr Vinod Kohli, president of the union said that
in a democratic set up as we have, the Press was a vital pillar. Media had a greaty
responsibility for capacity building so the system could run efficiently by providing factual
and true information to the public.
