Punjab rout Saurashtra by nine wickets in Col Nayudu Trophy

CHANDIGARH: Punjab defeated Saurashtra by nine wickets  on the last day of their league match played at Dhruv Pandove Stadium in Patiala.

Saurashtra, who trailed Punjab by 98 runs on the first innings, were bowled out for 259 in 124.3 overs in their second innings.  Their innings was sustained by a brilliant century by Vishavraj Jadeja  (108) off 180 balls with 14 boundaries and one six.

 Resuming at overnight score of 253 for 8 in 121.2 overs, Saurashtra could add only six runs to the overnight score before being bowled out for 259 in 124.3 overs. Left arm spinner Harpreet Brar, who had scalped 4 wickets yesterday, disposed off the remaining two to take his tally of wickets to 6 for 70.  He was ably supported by medium pacer Arshdeep Singh who scalped 3 for 70.

Set a target of 162 for an outright win Punjab opened with Shivam Bhambri and Mansab Gill and the duo put on 35 runs for the first wicket before Mansab Gill was trapped in front by Parth Bhatt for 18 off 51 balls inclusive of 2 boundaries.  

Mansab Gill’s departure brought  Himanshu Sharma to the crease.  Shivam Bhambri and Himanshu Sharma combine then started building up a partnership with judicious stroke play and kept the seven bowlers used by Saurashtra skipper at bay.  The two batsmen batted in tandem and took the score  to 162 for 1 in 50 overs to record a 9 wicket victory for their side and earn six precious points.

 Shivam Bhambri remained unbeaten on 65 off 135 balls inclusive of 9 boundaries while Himanshu Sharma  made a strokeful unbeaten 70 off 114 balls studded with 12 boundaries. The lone success for Saurashtra came through Parath Bhutt who took one wicket for 44 runs.

Punjab play their next match against Tripura from  December 8 at Dhruv Pandove Stadium Patiala.
