Power engineers to protests privatization on August 10

CHANDIGARH: Power engineers and employees across the country will protest against privatization of the power sector on August 10 .

It may be mentioned that a joint convention of central trade unions and farmer’s organisation called for nationwide protests on August 10 against the government’s pro-corporate policies , repeal of labour laws, MSP for agriculture produce, withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill, restoration of the Old Pension Scheme, an end to privatisation of public sector enterprises .

Shailendra Dubey Chairman All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) pointed out that as per the decision of the National Conference on 29 July ,it has been decided to launch a nationwide movement against power sector privatisation, anti-labour policies and anti-farmer laws. Electricity engineers and employees across the country will participate in protest with full commitment and unity.

V K Gupta media advisor AIPEF said that the protest’s call for withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill fits into the wider debate on electricity sector restructuring: efficiency, competition and distribution utilities’ financial stress versus affordability, cross-subsidy and access for farmers and poorer households. Electricity reform is politically sensitive because it affects irrigation, households and small enterprises, and is linked to agricultural distress, state finances and employees' futures.

The process of power sector privatisation has been further accelerated in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, leading to widespread resentment among electricity employees across the country. While the government is making the mistake is to see transfer of public assets to a private company only as an economic issue, whereas it also has labour and welfare implications.
