IIT Ropar resumes classes after over a week of closure due to floods

ROPAR: The Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Ropar which was shut down on August 20 due to flash floods in River Satluj has resumed normal classes from today after a ap of about one week.

The flood water from Budhki rivulet emerging into Satluj river hear here had entered the campus causing damage of estimated Rs.30 crores. The students of the IIT were rescued and sent to Chandigarh and other safe places.

An official spokesman said that Punjab government has asked the IIT management to submit a plan to prevent floods in future. The IIT would submit the plan within a seek to state and center governments.

Meanwhile Deputy Commissioner Rupnagar said that rehabilitation of flood hit people was in full swing and a compensation of Rs. 44 lakhs has so far been disbursed and Rs. One crore more has been received from state government. He added that about 300 villages ihis district were effected by floods, mainly four villages of Khairabad, Phool Kalan, Phool Khurd and Reduwal were worst hit. He said that 50 NGOs were helping district administration to provide relief material and medicines to marooned people.

About 300 Jhuggi dwellers who lost all their belongings in the flash floods alleged that they were given only Rs.8000 compensation to each of them. They claimed a loss of Rs.2 lakh of each family since their dwelling units were washed away by Satluj water. Many other flood effected people have complained that they were given compensation of Rs.400 per family.
