Flood situation in Rupnagar district is critical, water enters villages, IIT complex

RUPNAGAR: The flood situation in Rupnagar district is critical as the more water is released from Bhakhra Dam today that flooded over 20 villages along the Satluj river in Nangal, Nurpurbedi and Rupnagar areas. The water has also entered newsly construct complex of India Institute Ofg Technology(IIT) near here.

Deputy Commissioner Rupnagar Dr. Sumit Jarangal said that the flood situation is critical and villagers near the river Satlej are told to vacate the villages and reach safe places. He said that river Satluj was overflowing due to excess water released from Bhakra Dam and Rupnagar head works.He said that all steps were being taken to help the people in flood prone areas.

There are reports of breach in the Budki rivulet which flooded large areas and damaged crops. About 300 temporary Jhugis near Rupnagar head works were washed away in the flood water.The Lodhipur, Lohgarh and many other villages near Satluj bank wre flooded yesterday and villagers were forced to spent night on roof tops.

District administration has set up flood control room. In any emergency people can contact at 01881-221157, an official spokesman said.
