AAP government's dubious stance on Shubhkaran's killing failed to convince the High Court: Bajwa

CHANDIGARH: The Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday failed to explain what caused the delay in registering an FIR on the death of young farmer Shubhkaran Singh.

A division bench of the high court today held a hearing on the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by Punjab's Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Partap Singh Bajwa on February 27.

Observing the Punjab government's dubious stance on the issue, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today decided to form a committee under the leadership of a retired high court judge.

In a statement, Bajwa said that the prime focus of this committee would be to find out the jurisdiction in which the death of Shubhkaran took place. The committee would also investigate the type of weapon used that caused the death of this young farmer.

Senior Congress Leader said that the committee will also discover whether the force used by the State of Haryana against the protesting farmer is commensurate with the situation at the spot. The committee will concentrate on taking responsibility for the death of Shubhkaran Singh.

"The AAP government is still attempting to establish that the killing of Shubhkaran occurred in the jurisdiction of the Garhi police station of the Jind district of Haryana. However, this narrative of the AAP failed to convince the division of the High Court. The Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government is not honest in doing justice to Shubhkaran's killing", Bajwa added.

The opposition leader said that the High Court observed that in the present case, the State of Punjab has been shirking from its responsibility and conducting an investigation whereas the State of Haryana is over-eager to assume jurisdiction over the investigation of the death of Shubhkaran Singh.
