MVC recipient Brigadier Manjit Singh (retd) given tearful adieu

NAWANSHAHR: MVC recipient Brigadier Manjit Singh (retd) was given tearful adieu here this afternoon. He was awarded MVC on October 19, 1987 for showing exemplary courage while extending support to para-commandoes who had been surrounded by terrorists at Jaffna Fort in Sri Lanka. He was commanding the infantry Brigade at that time. He was born in Doaba region of the state.

Punjab Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Tripit Rajinder Singh Bajwa paid last tributes by placing wreaths on his body on behalf of CM Capt Amrinder Singh while Major Manish Sharma and Col Dalwinder Singh of 11core Jalandhar ASC Batalion paid floral tributes on behalf of Chief of Army Staff, Army Commander, Core Commander and Sub-area Commander. CM Capt Amrinder Singh is reported to have expressed his condolences with the bereaved family on phone. The deceased Brigadier was a maternal uncle of Sandeep Sandhu, political secretary to CM Punjab.

Others who paid last tributes included DCs of Nawanshahr and Jalandhar and SSPs of NAwanshahr, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar districts, local congress MLAs and other congress leaders.

Family members of the deceased Brigadier present on the occasion included his brothers Lt Col (retd) Mohinder Singh and Capt (retd) Davinder Singh, sister Tajinder Kaur and sisters-in—law Kanwaljit Kaur and Harbans Kaur. The pyre was lit by his nephews. The deceased Brigadier had retired on September 8, 1991. He was commissioned in the army on December 17, 1961 in Mahar Regiment. He also commanded Jack Light Infantry. He personally led his brigade during Operation Pawan in which his brigade was tasked to contact and extend support to the commandoes at Jaffna Fort.
