AMRITSAR: Shiromani Akali Dal Delhi Secretary General Mr Harwinder Singh Sarna welcomed the announcement of release of Prof Devinder Singh Bhullar after considering Bhai Davinderpal Singh Bhullar, convicted in the 1993 Maninderjit Singh Bitta bomb blast for the last 24 years, in a meeting of the Prison Review Committee today. Bhullar was pulled out of the jaws of death by the then chairman of the managing committee, Paramjit Singh Sarna, when the President had also rejected the 'Mercy Petition' and paved the way for his execution.
Harwinder Singh Sarna said that in order to get the death sentence of Davinderpal Singh Bhullar commuted, he had met the then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and stayed the death sentence.
He said that Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar was innocent and it was very important to save an innocent person. He said that in order to save Bhullar, he had met the then Law Minister Mr. Kapal Sibal and assured him that Bhullar would not be hanged at any cost as long as he was the Law Minister. Bhullar was sentenced to death in 2011 but due to his efforts in 2014 the Supreme Court commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment due to Bhullar's health. Bhullar's release was possible. He also thanked the Manmohan Singh government and the present Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Kejriwal government for ensuring Bhullar's release.
