Phagwara Police arrests travel agent Surinder Singh, 25 youths trapped in Russia

PHAGWARA:The main accused in a fake job racket, in which 26 youths of Punjab were allegedly duped with 24 of them still stuck in Russia who was arrested here on Sunday  and his accomplice Daljit Singh (arrested on Friday) were produced before Judicial Magistrate who sent them in Judicial jail for 14 days. Next hearing would be held on December 16.

Senior Superintendent of the Police Satinder Singh while confirming it told this correspondent here today that after getting secret information from the arrested Daljit Singh, the police laid a trap and arrested Surinder Singh, a resident of Kot-Bhai village in Muktsar. Daljit Singh resident of Village Khurampur was arrested on Friday.

 SSP said the arrested kingpin in fake job racket, Surinder Singh, along with his accomplice Daljit Singh, duped 26 youths of Phagwara after promising them jobs in a firm in Russia at a monthly salary of Rs 35, 000 each, the official said.

The youths gave him Rs 1.32 lakh each on a promise that they would be employed in the firm, he said.

But when they started working in the firm, the company gave each of them just Rs 20, 000 per month, he said.

One of the 26 youths Malkiat Singh, alias Sonu (30), died of illness as the company he was working with did not provide him timely medical aid, the police said.

 It was learnt that Sonu went into depression as he could not handle the pressure of being stuck in Russia, ” said his friend Joginder Pal, who also worked in the same company.

Pal alleged that the company did not cooperate or give any financial help for bringing back Sonu’s body.

“He and the 24 youths collected Rs 4-5 lakh for it, ” he claimed. Pal also urged the Indian government to rescue the other 24 youths stuck in Russia.
