National meet on rehab strategies concludes at RBU

MOHALI: Dr BS Chavan, Director-Principal, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, here today gave a clarion call to people to come forth and help in the rehabilitation of the disabled in the society.

He was speaking as Chief Guest at the valedictory function of the two-day 3rd National Conference Neuro Socio Psycho Dento-Facial, Linguistic and Hearing Impairment, at the Rayat Bahra University.

Dr Chavan said disabled individuals in the community face many social problems. Improving the quality of life of people with different grades of various types of disabilities was a difficult and challenging task. A new scheme District Disability Rehabilitation Centre for persons with disabilities launched by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, in January, 2000, and it is a step towards providing rehabilitation services and implementation of Persons with Disability Act. 1995.

The DDRCs besides other things provide therapeutic services like Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy, he added.

Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Chancellor of Rayat Bahra University, speaking on the occasion, said that over the years since its inception the Rayat Bahra University has carved a niche for itself in the field of education. It had been periodically hosting national and international seminars and workshops with a view to keep the faculty updated about the latest developments and advancements.

Dr Daljit Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the Rayat Bahra University, said that the experts who participated in the conference had focused on the role of physiotherapy, neurotherapy, psychotherapy, music therapy, and linguistic therapy in the rehabilitation strategies.

Those who spoke on different aspects of the rehabilitation strategies included conference Chairperson Dr Neena Mehta, Dean of the University School of Allied Sciences (USMAS) of the Rayat Bahra University, and Dr Tarun Kalra Dean of the Dental College and Hospital, Dr Jaimanti Bakshi, Head Unit II Department of ENT, PGIMER, Chandigarh, Dr Dharam Vir, Faculty, Speech and Hearing, PGIMER, Chandigarh, Ruma chakravarti,
