CHANDIGARH: Ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly polls, Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu on Friday retained the Tarn Taran Assembly seat, defeating his nearest rival, Sukhwinder Kaur of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), who was leading in the initial rounds of counting, by more than 12,000 votes.

CHANDIGARH: Under Bhagwant Mann’s leadership, the Punjab government has achieved a historic milestone in litchi production and export, leading to a massive increase in farmers’ income. In 2023-24, the state produced 71,490 metric tons of litchi, which is 12.39% of the country’s total. This figure remains approximately the same in the current year. Litchi is being grown across 3,900 hectares in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Nawanshahr, Hoshiarpur, and Ropar districts, with Pathankot alone accounting for 2,200 hectares. The Mann government’s crop diversification policy has given farmers a new alternative for year-round stable income, moving them away from the wheat-paddy cycle.

CHANDIGARH: Punjab School Education minister Vijay Inder Singla, on Friday, said that as many as 12 government schools of Sangrur, Jalndhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Hoshiarpur, SBS Nagar, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, SAS Nagar and Fatehgarh Sahib districts have been renamed after freedom fighters and martyrs of the state to give due respect to their valiant spirit.
