SANGRUR: Congress leaders today gave a clarion call to strengthen the party at the grassroots level and reach out to people personally as much as possible. “No matter how popular you may be, you just cannot win the elections without proper and strong booth management”, the Congress leaders told the workers at the ‘Harr booth Mazboot’ programme here today.
Addressing the programme, the AICC general secretary in charge Punjab Bhupesh Baghel said people of Punjab were looking forward to Congress to provide a better and people friendly alternative to them. He said, now they have experienced all the party governments and they can judge it for themselves as which party provided them the best government.
The former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister said that people of Punjab were faced with a double whammy of the Bharatiya Janata Party government at the centre and the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab. He said, while the BJP preached and practiced hate and polarization, it had also failed to generate jobs and control inflation.
On the other hand, he said, the AAP government in Punjab was equally worse as it had failed at all fronts. He noted that Punjab had crossed all the limits of lawlessness and anarchy as gangsters had no fear of law. He pointed out how people were forced to pay ransom to gangsters and anyone who disobeyed their diktats was killed in broad daylight.
Calling for unity in the party, Baghel said, smaller differences are part of every party and these can be sorted out for the bigger battle that the Congress has to fight against the AAP, the BJP and the Akalis. He expressed confidence that the Congress will emerge stronger and more powerful in the Vidhan Sabha elections as everyone had a common goal to see the party government in Punjab.
Speaking on the occasion, the PCC president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said that the Congress was on a very strong wicket. He pointed out, the Congress had defeated the AAP and the BJP in the parliamentary elections by winning seven of the 13 seats. He said the AAP despite being in power in the state and despite abusing the state machinery could win just three seats while the BJP could not open its account.
He expressed confidence that the Congress will emerge as an emphatic winner as the AAP government cannot misuse its official machinery in these elections the way it has been misusing it in the by-elections.
Underlining the need for strengthening the party, he said, unless and until the party is strong at the grassroots at the booth level, no matter how popular a leader may be, he or she may not be able to win. He quoted the example of late Sidhu Moosewala, pointing out despite being an internationally famous singer, he lost by over sixty thousand votes for lack of proper booth management.
AICC Joint Treasurer and former minister Vijay Inder Singla said that people of Punjab were looking forward to a Congress government in the state. He said, people have now realized that only the Congress can provide good and people friendly governance. He said the AAP was completely exposed as people had seen the reality of its leaders.
Among those present on the occasion included, besides Vijay Inder Singla, Ms Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Rajinder Deepa, Durlabh Sidhu, Dalvir Goldy, Shubham Sharma, Jagdev Gaga and others.
